In today’s digital age, technology has become an essential part of our lives. For children, the internet is not just a tool for learning but a space for entertainment, socializing, and creativity.
As parents, we often face the challenge of ensuring that our children enjoy these technological benefits in a safe and healthy way.
This growing concern has prompted initiatives like ACTT's collaboration with PB Tech, which recently hosted an exciting and educational event—Build A PC With Your Child—to help families engage with technology in a hands-on, meaningful way.

1. A Shared Experience: Building A PC Together
Last Saturday afternoon, families from Christchurch gathered at the Kōwhai Room in Rārākau for an exciting opportunity to assemble a high-end PC worth 3000 NZD. The event was designed exclusively for 8 families, with registration through schools, creating a unique opportunity for families to connect and learn together.
This event was more than just an opportunity to “play” with technology. It was a chance to delve deeper into the world of computers, to understand how each component works in unison to create a functioning system. From the motherboard to the memory chips, parents and children worked side by side to assemble a custom-built computer. Through this process, children learned not only the technical aspects of computers but also gained a deeper appreciation for the role technology plays in their daily lives.

2. Moving Beyond the Screen: Hands-On Tech Learning
In an age where children spend much of their time on screens—whether for gaming, socializing, or schoolwork, this event provided a refreshing shift from passive screen time to active learning. Instead of merely interacting with the digital world, children had the chance to get their hands on real hardware, gaining practical experience in building and troubleshooting a computer.
Under the expert guidance of PB Tech technicians, families learned how to install key components like the processor, memory, hard drive, and graphics card. This hands-on experience gave children valuable skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and technical knowledge, while parents had the chance to guide and learn alongside their children, strengthening family bonds in the process.
The shared experience of assembling a computer allowed for meaningful interactions, where parents and children collaborated on solving challenges and discovering solutions together. These moments of teamwork and problem-solving helped to build stronger relationships, as parents gained a deeper understanding of their children's interests and learning styles.

3. Supporting Future Growth: Empowering Families with Technology
One of the key highlights of this event was the opportunity for families to receive a $20 NZD voucher, redeemable at PB Tech stores in Hornby and Christchurch CBD. This thoughtful gesture supported ACTT’s ongoing mission to promote parent-child engagement and provide tech education opportunities to families. By offering this hands-on experience, ACTT and PB Tech helped families see the potential of technology not only as a tool for entertainment but as a gateway to learning and growth.
This initiative is a perfect example of how we can empower our children to be curious and creative in their approach to technology. Instead of merely consuming digital content, they are encouraged to explore, create, and innovate. In doing so, we are nurturing a generation that is not only tech-savvy but also well-equipped to navigate and thrive in an increasingly digital world.

4. A Healthy Approach to Technology Use
As much as technology enriches our lives, it’s important to remind ourselves and our children that it should be used in a balanced and responsible way. The *Build A PC With Your Child* event serves as a reminder that technology should be fun, educational, and integrated into our daily lives in a healthy and sustainable way.
It’s vital to foster an environment where technology is not just a source of passive entertainment but a tool for creativity, learning, and growth. By encouraging our children to engage with technology in hands-on ways, like building a PC, we can help them develop a sense of ownership and understanding of the tools they use every day.

Looking Ahead: More Opportunities for Family Engagement
We hope that events like this can continue to grow, providing more families with the opportunity to connect, learn, and explore the world of technology together. By offering these experiences, we are not just helping children build technical skills, but also preparing them for the future—one where creativity, innovation, and collaboration are key.
As we move forward in this digital era, let’s continue to find ways to engage with technology in healthy, constructive, and enjoyable ways. Let’s inspire our children to not only be consumers of technology but creators, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers who are ready to shape the future.
